Ela Korčula

ELA XXXV Annual General Meeting

Dear ELA friends,

We are pleased to invite you to the XXXV Annual General Meeting of the European Lawyers’ Association. The meeting will be held on the island of Korčula, Town of Korčula in the Dubrovnik region of Croatia, between 30th of May and 2nd of June 2019.

Korčula - The town of the Moreška sword dance

The medieval town of Korčula is situated on the island of the same name. It was a fully-fleshed town by the 10th century, and a socially organized town which was granted its own Statute in the 13th century. The Statute regulated life and set strict rules for the building of the town dwellings in the shape of a fishbone. In old Greek times, the island of Korčula, together with the Pelješac channel, was an important point of orientation for marine voyages on the Adriatic sea. Today Korčula is a brilliant blend of tradition and modernity, of pleasant life and hospitality and the only Dalmatian island that boats a Michelin recommendation for its local food offer. In addition, Korčula offers world famous wines and it is also the birthplace of the world traveller, Marco Polo, and the place where Moreška Sword Dancers live. The Moreška sword dance was once performed across the Mediterranean. Nowadays, the dance is performed exclusively in Korčula and this has been so for the last 400 years. In the town of Korčula, almost one member in every family has taken part in the performance of the Moreška Sword Dance, a one-of-a-kind chivalrous sword dance that the people of Korčula have embraced as an inseparable part of the town's identity, a common thread that always brings them together. As any dancer will tell you, the Moreška Sword Dance is Korčula's way of life.
